A “pictorial turn” after the “language” one? Are we living in “the image society”?
In a way we are, expecially in the way images are forced on us. In this society images are more present, they are proffered more often than words or texts; we watch more images and read less and less. Therefore, a real problem has to be tackled, it’s not just a purely theoretical matter. On the other hand, moving from texts to images implies changes in understanding, in culture and in behaviours which can’t find their answers in linguistic models anymore.
But perhaps this issue must be addressed in a different way, without setting pictorial against verbal, but investigating how the change in their relationship is already projecting itself somewhere else. In this sense the relaunch of our reflection about “editing” (as we have got used to calling it) hints at a link between verbal and pictorial, where one subverts the supposed specifities of the other one while, at the same time, permeating and changing it. Words are not captions to images, nor are images illustrations of words; their relationship creates other levels: matching, juxtaposition, combination, overtaking, interweaving. Therefore, touch technology might be not only a gesture or a functional need of the electronic interface, but a sign of the moving relationship between visual and verbal; sound is not an optional supplement to written words nor the soundtrack of what is shown but another level of that relationship; and how does “gaze” ( which photography has introduced us to more than anything else) place itself in these relationships? An so on.
Do fifty years of constant criticism of metaphysics, i.e. of dual thought conceived as a system of oppositions, bear more fruit in practice and technology than in reflection? When are we going to have an “expanded field” of the relationship between verbal and pictorial? Do you remember when the post-structuralist quadrilateral was resumed? Verbal at one vertex, pictorial at another, and the remaining two? Paraphrasing Moholy-Nagy’s famous prefiguration of the pictorial turn, when he predicted that illiterate people in the future won’t be able to read images rather than words, we could reply that we will take different directions, in our reflections and choices, according to what we will put at the two verteces.
